SAP is changing the women’s game
SAP is changing the women’s game
Tennis has been always considered as the individual sport by excellence. It is about two players split by a net, who can not speak with their coaches during the game in which mental strength is a key factor to win games. Tennis teaches you to how to get out of troubles by your own, but due to technology things have changed in WTA (Women’s Tennis Association).
If you are a women’s fan tennis, you might have noticed that since 2008, the WTA has allowed coaching sessions between set and changeovers. And coaches wear microphones to be listened by the tv audience. But this coaching sessions are about to change thanks to SAP.
In tennis, sports, and in any business, working with data has become a double-edge sword.
Regarding tennis, SAP has developed a new app that let coaches gather data in real time and see what is really happening on the court. Moreover, SAP, let coches store data of their pupils and rivals and see what tendences have they had during the season. That will allow them to develop a precise strategy with which to face the games during the season.
This has caused much criticism among tennis fans, players, media and the dome of the tour.
What do you think of the intromission of technology in tennis? Does it really help the player? Having data, in sport, is as important as the mental power?

I was not aware of this new app developed by SAP but I think it is a powerful tool to engage fans. Nowadys, any business has to deal with enormous amounts of data, what we call BIG DATA. So, in my opinion, this innovation will be beneficial for the tennis industry. Regarding to players and coaches, I believe will be profitable in order to know better their rivals (strengths and weaknesses) and find the best strategy to beat them. I also see benefits for the fans because it's a way to engage more the audience in the game. Finally, I think mental power in any sport is a very important capability but the players that are able to find a trade-off between managing efficiently this data and mental power are the ones who can succeed the most
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said that tennis players should find the trade off between managing efficiently data and mental power.
DeleteBut imagine that that technological introductions are accepted in junior tours (where children plan), should the ATP, WTA, or national federations provide to them that tools?, or should they keep imporivng their mental strengh in order to be a pro?.

This is a great notice for the womans who play tennis, because they will increase their level. Anything that are innovation and technology are welcomed, and more if will help someone to be better.
ReplyDeleteThis technology will make the competition more competitive and interesting, wich i'm in favour.
Due to this, in my opinion they should be the same coonditions on each category, male and female, to be equally. Beacause if not, ones are with advantage and play with different conditions. What i mean is that on the year we are, everyone has to have the same conditions being equally, beacause if not they could seem that the womans need this technology because are worst.
So in conclusion SAP is an awesome software, but the WTA made a mistake applying it only for womans, they should be for the both or for anyone.

DeleteI agree with what you are saying. Currently, WTA, is having more and more audience, and women level is awesome. I hope as well that this technology gets introduced into the ATP so people can learn more about that sports.
DeleteBut I wonder, is it possible to upgrade to current technology a sport which is based in tradition and history?. Morover, If most of the people tennis fans are elder, what would they think about that modifications?

Tennis has shown us once again that it is at the forefront of new technologies, that other sports must learn. They started with the hawk-eye and now with this new technology. Chapeau.
ReplyDeleteI believe that tennis can improve thanks to the SAP, increasing its quality and testing new techniques thanks to all the data that can be obtained. This fact can lead to fans having more information about their idols. In addition, television programs may have more data to discuss and analyze the game, having more audience and increasing the income from the sponsors.
That is 100% true. With that information, sports programms quality increase exponentialy, but what if most of tennis viewrs fans are elder?. Do you think that technological intoductions are an idea of the ATP and WTA, to encourage more young people to play?
DeleteI think that sooner or later technology will be present in this type of sports, so the sooner we get used to it, the better tennis will go in the future
DeleteNowadays, technology is becoming part of our lives so, I do think we have to take advantage of it. As Eulàlia mention, big data is currently a common work in companies. From point of view, many firms are adapting and implementing changes due to the technology, so sports should make the same. I believe this new idea could help to engage more fans. It is something new so, people will be exited. The advantages are clear, but what about if this data is not used to become better? Taking into the account factors such as privacy, hackers…
ReplyDeleteFor me, it is fascinating to work with these innovations in recent years. As a follower who was always interested in the defects and virtues of the players, it is interesting to see how we can obtain an analysis of the opponent with the implementation of the technology. The technological contribution I think will benefit tennis and equity of opportunities.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinon is a great new that tennis has implemented this kind of technology because help players to get better and they can analyze their problems in the game, thier rivals....
I think that it's helpful for players the implemention of this innovative technology. But to conclude from my point of view is more important the mental power or strengh tan having data, because when you're in a game technology doesn't help you win the game but having mental strengh like Rafael Nadal is one aspects more important about tennis
